6 Ways to overcome emotional trauma

Category Advice

Healing from emotional wounds is not an easy process. It takes courage, patience, and a willingness to confront painful experiences. While there are no easy solutions or quick fixes, there are some signs that indicate you are making progress in your healing journey. Here are six uncomfortable signs that you're healing emotionally.

1 - Allowing yourself to feel your emotions

One of the most uncomfortable aspects of healing is facing the emotions you may have kept suppressed over a period of time. But as you work through these emotions, you begin to understand that allowing yourself to heal is not just the recovery, it is a culmination of a range of emotions.

You may experience various emotions, from anger and sadness to joy and relief. But it is important to allow yourself to feel them fully, without judgement or self-criticism. Only through the acceptance of your feelings can you truly move forward.

Tip: keep a journal to express your past hurt; writing often helps us to express our difficulties.

2 - Accepting past experiences for what they are

Accepting past difficult experiences is a crucial step in emotional healing because it requires us to confront the pain and trauma that we have experienced in our lives. When we're in denial, we're unable to face the impact of these experiences, and we may try to avoid dealing with them altogether.

It's important to note that accepting these experiences does not mean that we are condoning what happened to us or that we are okay with it. It simply means that we are willing to acknowledge the truth of our experiences, even if they were painful.

Tip: past painful experiences allow us to look at what we learnt and write down three things from that experience.

3 - You come to understand that healing is not a linear path

Emotional healing is not a straight line. It's a journey with ups, downs, twists, and turns. There may be times when you feel like you're taking a step forward, and other times when you feel like you're taking three steps backwards.

Understanding this can be uncomfortable, but it can also be liberating. It means that setbacks are expected, and you're willing to come to terms with the fact that even the best-laid plans can fall apart regardless of your motivations, intentions, or efforts.

Tip: sometimes, you need to revisit the experience to understand its meaning fully; this may feel like you are not making progress but seeing a therapist may help you to process the past.

4 - You start to step out of your comfort zone more

Stepping out of your comfort zone is an essential aspect of emotional healing because it helps us break free from the patterns of behaviour that have been holding us back. Often, we stay within our comfort zones because we fear the unknown or we worry that we may fail or be rejected.

However, it is through these experiences that we can challenge ourselves to push past our perceived limits and expand our capabilities. As we take risks and try new things, we realise we are capable of more than we thought. This can lead to empowerment and self-confidence, an incredibly healing source of emotional strength.

Tip: Make an effort to join a hobby club or study or try something new; fitness or sport can help to release negative emotions and increase dopamine. Read more about finding clubs and communities in your area.

5 - Invest in me time

Investing in "me time" can be a valuable and rewarding experience for individuals looking to prioritise their well-being and personal growth. It involves setting aside time regularly to engage in activities that bring joy and relaxation, such as reading, meditating, practising yoga, or taking a soothing bath.

It means you're starting to find balance in your life, and your past no longer defines you. You may still have challenges to overcome, but you're more equipped to deal with them healthily and constructively.

Additionally, investing in "me time" can also involve seeking support from professionals, such as therapists or coaches, who can help individuals identify and address any underlying issues or challenges that may be preventing them from fully embracing self-care.

Tip: Set aside time for yourself, and try yoga or meditation to release anxiety. New to Yoga? Watch this video for useful tips to get started.

6 - Be open to help and support and communicate with your loved ones about your situation

Finally, emotional healing involves being open to help and support from others. It can be uncomfortable to ask for help, as it requires vulnerability and humility. But your healing process needs to seek support from those who care about you. It may be a therapist, a friend, or a family member. Regardless of who it is, being open to help and support is a sign that you're on the path to emotional healing.

Healing from emotional wounds is difficult and uncomfortable, but it is necessary for growth and personal development. The signs of emotional healing may not always feel comfortable or pleasant, but they are essential indicators that you are progressing on your journey.
