A buyer's guide to 2022's top luxury sedans

Category Lifestyle

A rumour spread around the motoring scene that by 2030 we will likely see the complete discontinuation of sedan-type vehicles. Yet despite the relative popularity of SUV and crossover classes, the sedan market continues to soldier on within South Africa's premium and executive vehicle options.

Many of us seek the prestige of a luxury German sedan. They are status symbols of a unique calibre and remain squarely within our purview. Are 2022s prices justified? And from which manufacturer will you receive the best value? We take a closer look at 5 of South Africa's most coveted sedans and provide insider tips to take note of before buying.

BMW 3 Series

First released in 2019, the BMW 3 Series G20 is the latest iteration of South Africa's second-highest-selling sedan. The LCI (facelift) was announced in May and has caused excitement among BMW lovers across the nation.

Much like previous models, owners have the option to choose from either a petrol or diesel engine. The 2.0l turbo-powered engine offers 150kW alongside the range's signature 50:50 weight distribution. The 330i provides impressive performance at 185kWs, so if power is your game, this would be your option. Within its extensive selection, the best pick in terms of value for money would be the 320d.

Our only criticism of the G20 is its drive tends to be slightly rigid and firm. Larger passengers will find their legroom squeezed in the rear. However, on the plus side, the 3-series offers an engaging drive, precision handling and, as always, excellent engine diversity.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The titular C-Class is the ultimate expression of both style and comfort. Luxury, bespoke finishes, and an exceptional drive come standard. Locally built, the newest iteration of the C-Class took quite a while to debut.

Engine displacement comes in a variety of turbo-charged options. These include a 1.6l (95kW and 155kW) for the C160 and C180, a 2.0l (135 - 180kW) for the C200, 250 and 300, and a high-powered 4.0l V8 (380kW) for the ferocious C63 AMG.

While there are two engine types on offer, our pick of the list is the hybridised diesel C220 which offers superior power distribution over and above the C180 and C200. We're huge fans of the tech-laden interior, although we're not sure anyone over the age of 35 will appreciate the idea of what looks like an iPad bolted to the dashboard. Styling, on the other hand, is not a massive departure from previous models and maintains the sense of elegance we expect.

We weren't too impressed with the power distribution of the petrol engines, and while the C220 alleviates the issue, we aren't convinced the C-Class lives up to its asking price.

Audi A4

Rounding up the Luxury German Sedan trifecta is the bold and ever-versatile Audi A4 2022. The new look and feel may not encourage new buyers, but Audi understands their market, and they know them well. Despite retaining the underdog status within its class, the A4 continues to soldier on in the background.

The new and improved interior is struck above the seemingly bland offerings of the previous iterations, and the inbuilt MMI software is one of the better in its range. The engine is a standard four-cylinder, 12-volt hybrid 2.0l turbo and produces a comfortable 110kW. Much like Mercedes and BMW, drivers can choose from either a petrol or diesel derivative.

The A4 may not have the dynamics of the 3 series, nor does it have the luxury of the C-Class. But if you look beyond its relatively safe and anodyne styling, you'll be more than satisfied with what you get vs what you pay for.

Lexus ES

The one thing we've always appreciated from Japanese car makers is reliability. However, this sometimes comes at the cost of character. But if style, comfort, and luxury are up your alley and you don't care too much about the thrill of the drive, then the Lexus ES is the car for you.

Referred to by some as simply a Toyota Camry that went to a private school, the ES offers both a petrol and a hybrid engine which offers drivers excellent fuel economy and stability. This is quite surprising, given that its 3.5l V6 delivers an impressive 221kW. You won't ever have to worry about a lack of performance.

Standard features are nil, so if you're expecting anything to come with your package, you'll be disappointed. However, you'll have the option to add features such as rear camera assist and heated seats as optional extras. Rear boot space is rather lacking, and the drive is somewhat akin to the thrill of a donkey cart but rest assured, this car will see you through thick and thin.

Alfa Romeo Giulia

The Alfa Romeo Giulia is this segment's wild card entry. The antithesis of the Lexus ES in almost every way and simply the most stunning-looking vehicle on our list. The Giulia is the natural replacement for the 159 and is an eye-turning showstopper wherever you take it.

The interior borrows heavily from Ferrari's inspiration and, despite its luxury amenities, feel's more like a sports car than even the BMW. Combining razor-sharp steering with breathtaking acceleration, all delivered from a commendable 2.0l turbo engine and suburb drive train. We're happy to say this vehicle offers the best drive in this segment.

Alfa Romeo's vehicles have had a reputation for spending more time in the workshop than on the road. But that has been rectified somewhat as they realise that engineering is just as important as style and speed. The newest generation Giulia is both reliable and gorgeous.

We were a little disappointed that only one variant is on offer, which means owners can either take it or leave it. But what you get is perhaps the most accurate interpretation of driving exuberance. As Jeremy Clarkson once said, you aren't a true motorhead unless you've owned an Alfa.
