Gauteng, known for its busy lifestyle and business-centric populace. But beyond the hustle and bustle of city life, outlying areas provide both the convenience of significant hubs and tranquil and scenic getaways and private estates perfect for a 2nd or holiday home for weekend getaways.

Holiday homes need not be near the beach or the Western Cape to provide you with South Africa's best scenery. Some of the most incredible locations are just 2 - 4 hours away from Pretoria. Buying a second home or holiday home closer to Pretoria makes it easy to take quick weekend getaways.

Take a trip to one of the below-suggested areas and book a viewing with the local estate agents to get an idea of what is available. Why not consider some of these incredibly picturesque areas outside the hustle and bustle of city living?

Clarens

Clarens is a tiny piece of heaven nestled snuggly within a valley in the Maluti Mountains, 5 km north of the Lesotho border. Established in 1912, it still bares the unmistakable qualities of a typical South African dorpie trapped within a time capsule.

Slow-paced, quiet and surrounded by endless landscapes and views.

While the town continues to hold onto its quant charms, the area outskirts have seen quite a bit of steady development as more people seek quieter alternatives.

Property within the town ranges from historic homes to vacant plots for development.

The Clarens Golf & Luxury Estate

Immaculate surroundings of the natural habit with its unique and exquisite birdlife provide homeowners with a retreat far beyond what one would expect in a remote area. There are several rental options available on the estate with options for development.

Some two hours east of Pretoria, within Mpumalanga, lies the historic town of Dullstroom. The region's unique beauty of the highveld plateau offers an incredibly distinct climate of emerald green landscapes and meadows with mild temperatures in the summer and frigid winters perfect for huddling around a well-lit fire.

Peace and tranquillity are the hallmarks of this highland town, and property ranges from freestanding plots to stately villas and farm holdings.

A slow-paced life and a close-knit community of like-minded individuals define the town's atmosphere. Property here ranges between R450 000 for free-standing plots, and 2 to 3-bedroom homes can range anywhere between R1m to R2m depending on proximity to the village.

Highlands Gate Golf & Trout Estate

Just ten minutes from the town lies the secluded Highlands Gate & Trout Estate. Described as the perfect weekend retreat for outdoor enthusiasts, the estate, set to the backdrop of imposing Mpumalanga mountains, is rated as one of the best in the country.

Walkersons is not golf but trout and is equally magnificent.

Affectionately known as Harties to residents, Hartbeespoort is famous for its cable car mountains, artsy aesthetic, and, of course, the immaculate dam, which is the centrepiece to which all the neighbouring suburbs surround.

Harties is a trendy destination thanks to its 45-minute proximity to Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Many business owners commute from one of the town's luxury estates to the city but prefer to call Harties their permanent home. Property within the area ranges towards the more high-end scale with multiple lifestyle estates and brand-new developments.

Pecanwood Estate

Our top choice for Harties has to be the unrivaled gem that is Pecanwood Estate. Situated on the banks of the Harties damn, this exceptional stretch of real estate is simply par-none in terms of property offerings and the convenience and luxury of the lifestyle one will experience.

Groot Marico

A brief 2.5-hour drive to the North West and just south of the natural reserve it's named for lies the tranquil village of Groot Marico. A rustic town that simply breathes atmosphere, Groot Marico is surrounded by bushveld yet sits along the banks of the Groot Marico river, which grants the area a welcoming shade of greenery. It's remote, yet not entirely removed from civilisation, making it one of the few places in the country where one can escape the demands of city living.

Property in the area includes freestanding homes closer to the town, generally ranging between R1m to R2m. Farm holdings and larger plots can be found along the outskirts, with plenty of opportunity to expand.

Known for its iconic hot springs, from which the town derived the name Waterbaths until 2002, Bela Bela was subsequently renamed to capture the idyllic landscape and natural beauty to behold. A town so nice, they named it twice!

Nestled within this quiet northern town is one of South Africa's most well-established private golf courses and estates. Elements Private Golf Reserve is situated upon 495 hectares of property and is located only an hour and 30 minutes drive north of Pretoria within the magnificent Waterberg region of the Limpopo Province.
