National Heritage Day is coming up! What are your plans?
Heritage Day is a special occasion for all South Africans to celebrate their diverse and eclectic backgrounds. It presents an opportunity to come together and appreciate the incredible cultures that make up our Rainbow Nation!
We at Ikonic Real Estate work with various clients from all backgrounds, and we all have our unique identities. One thing we all share in common is our love for food and everything to do with the braai. That's why sometimes we refer to Heritage Day as Braai Day!

Delicious Food and Music Festival - Johannesburg (24 - 25 September)
A vibrant occasion filled with food and drink of South African origin. Following a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Delicious Food and Music Festival is returning to Johannesburg! The festival line-up has not yet been announced, but this annual event never disappoints!

Joburg Art Fair- Sandton (7-9 September 2022)
In addition to 23 galleries and 11 special projects, the annual Joburg Art Fair will feature the best in contemporary African art and design. Art Talks by Alfa Romeo will feature local and international galleries and artists.

Brush up on SA's History
As any history whizz will tell you, South Africa is a compendium filled with twists and turns from wearing European nations to the migration and cultural exchange of African tribes and settlers. Situated at the southernmost border of Africa, we had a truly unique advantage as a trading hub and a bridge point between the west and the orient.
Beyond this, we also have an intense political history centred around fighting against injustice and racial segregation. We have some profound wounds to heal, but despite our shortcomings, our resilience and unique perspective on cultural exchange has seen us grow stronger and wiser.

The History of Heritage Day
September the 24th is known throughout South Africa as Heritage Day. However, it was once also known as King Shaka Day, commemorating the memory of South Africa's most prominent Zulu king.
Known as a unifying force that brought many of the Zulu tribes together under one banner, King Shaka is credited as the founder of the Zulu nation. The Zulu nation would gather at his grave site to honour his memory. In 1995, there was a petition to have this day recognised as a national holiday. Yet because Shaka Day was seen as a predominantly Zulu tradition, parliament rejected the request to the chagrin of the majority Zulu Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).
However, parliament reached a compromise. Rather than simply honouring Zulu traditions alone, Heritage Day was suggested as a more inclusive holiday reflecting the diversity we share as a nation.
In 2005, there was yet another attempt to informally change the name to Braai Day after an intense media campaign. This spurious request seemed to encompass the more modern tradition of braaing. Despite this, the day is still formally recognised as Heritage Day.
