On the one hand, the bright and fruity hints from succulent, proudly South African grapes to the complexity and rich flavour of our tasteful classics. This year's exceptional IWSC finalists include some heavy hitter brands and a wide variety of wines, from the gold-winning Cabernet to the timeless appeal of 2015's Malbec blend. Founded in 1969, the International Wine & Spirit Competition receives entries from over 90 countries worldwide and has a distinct reputation for giving out the most coveted awards within the winery scene. To any blend, gold is considered the highest honour.

Nicolas Van Der Merwe Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
Described as full-bodied yet soothing and elegant, Nicholas Van Der Merwe's Cabernet features soft tannins, a dense middle palate, and hints of blackberry with a long enriching finish. Some tasters have described this undercurrent as minty with a few notes of plum, raspberry and blueberry to boot.
This well-balanced Sauvignon took centre stage, earning 96 of 100 points and achieving solid gold. The IWSC mentioned this ravishing red as "quite the beast." This particular blend is on the higher end of the price scale thanks to its 8-year-long vintage.

The palatable Quoin Rock MCC Red is as delightful in flavour as its suave matt black packaging suggests. There is a delicate hint of black fruits and floral notes to the smell blended with a concentrated and incredibly balanced palate.
Plushy and elegant, this well-priced red shows the complexity of a classic blend while maintaining the vibrance of more modern samplings. It's a subtle flavour, but the fruity hints tend to come through in the aftertaste with a more pronounced richness. The Quoin Rock MCC Red Blend earned a stylish 96 out of 100 (Gold) thanks to its well-rounded flavouring for its price.

Chocoholic Pinotage 2018
It wouldn't have the name tagged on if it weren't for a bold and enticing chocolate flavour! Delightful, yet not too juvenile in its presentation, this abundantly ripe red fulls the palate with a hint of berry against the backdrop of an earthy texture.
There is a distinct velvety opulence nestled within the aftertaste. Some critiques have even noted an almost vanilla-like underpinning which adds to the remarkable coalition of flavour bursting from this nectarous delight. This autosomal blend scored a tasteful 94 out of 100, earning it sterling silver from the IWSC panel. Simply divine!

Southern Point Shiraz-Merlot 2019
This list simply wouldn't be complete without a shiraz or merlot. Luckily enough, this particular blend is an amalgamation of both! It is a scintillating combination of violets, roses, raspberries and plums, which culminate in an array of aromatic scents. Rich tannins are superbly balanced by elegant acidity.
The palate is complemented by an evolved violet with a beguiling yet sophisticated concentration of textures. It's beautifully crafted with packaging to match, scoring a solid 95 out of 100 and earning it solid gold.

Mt Vernon Malbec 2015
We're rounding off our recommended wine selection with a timeless classic. The Mt Vernon Malbec 2015 offers a dense and dark fruity flavour to the palate with a supple fragrance that lends to its midnight and sultry mystique. The initial chocolatey brioche taste is followed by the sweet and sour nectar of plum and rounded off by rigid tannins to provide a well-balanced appeal.
This complex yet classy red has a magnificent structure and a long, dark, fruity finish. A favourite among critiques, this vintage wine scored a remarkable 95 out of 100, earning it a well-deserved solid gold.
