What sort of December Holiday are you planning?

Category Lifestyle

Our summer-Christmas vacations are back in our control for the first time in two years. No longer bound by travel restrictions and Covid protocols, our world is again our oyster! A fact that so many of us have taken for granted.

The desire to travel overseas or experience some of our local wonders has never been this high. We're simply itching to take back the time lost and experience the world as much as we can in the short time we have on it.

What are your plans for the holidays? Are you looking to experience beach days with tropical sundowners? Do you feel the need to go camping in the wilderness? Or do you hear the call of colder climates? We've compiled the perfect list to match your holiday plans regardless of taste.

Beach holidays in Antigua and Mexico

While South Africa is known for its endless stretches of ocean beachfront, sometimes it's fun to compare and contrast what we might find in the supple paradise of the Caribbean. Tucked away within this sprawling archipelago are the tropical islands of Antigua and Barbuda. Offering crystal blue waters and icing sugar sand, the seaside town of Shoal Bay in Antigua is truly a sight to behold.

Go diving and explore the natural coral reefs and then relax at the selection of bars and open-air restaurants during the evening. Or, if you prefer, take a cruise on a private yacht and explore the hidden and secluded Jabberwock beach.

Mexico has an abundance of hidden coves and islands waiting for an adventure. On the island of Marietas, an underground beach sanctuary awaits those with curious minds. Boat trips from Puerto Vallarta provide convenient access to this unique shoal. You may even see a humpback while paddling through its calm waters.

Bush safaris in the Kruger and Serengeti

Take a moment to appreciate the natural beauty of South Africa or venture across the borders to the internationally renowned Serengeti in Tanzania.

Closer to home, the Kruger National Park is known as the oldest reserved in the country and has received international recognition. The park stretches across two million hectares of prime natural real estate. It offers visitors every opportunity to catch one of the Big Five on any given day.

Across the border and 3500kms away from the Kruger National is the Ikorongo Game Reserve on the Serengeti. Known as the Icon of Africa, the national park is located in the northernmost tip of Tanzania and is UNESCO-listed as the oldest ecosystem on earth. The flora and fauna within this isolated habitat have seen few changes for the past 1 million years.

Listed as an epic expanse of natural lowland plains and endless grassland fields, one is likely to spot one of the Big Five among other safari favourites. These include Giraffes, Zebra, Hyenas, Cheetah, and the incredibly rare Wild Dog.

Skiing in Canada and the French Alps

Maybe it's more than a change of scenery that you're seeking. Perhaps the colder climate and pure white icy slopes have been calling your name. There are two notable skiing destinations that just happen to be on opposite sides of the Atlantic.

Located in the Canadian province of British Columbia is the world-famous Whistler Blackcomb resort, which combines the exquisite terrain of two mountain peaks to form its premier skiing location. With over 27 ski lifts and 200 runs, you are simply spoiled for choice in terms of slopes and terrain. The resort also boasts some of the latest technical facilities, so a professional trainer will always be onsite if you're new to the sport.

Across the ocean towards the renowned Alps shared by three nations is the Courchevel resort on the French side. Known as the world's largest alpine ski resort, Courchevel stretches 600 km of interconnected runs across almost 10 peaks, reaching the nose-bleeding heights of 2500 metres above sea level.

Even though this terrain receives almost four metres of natural snow annually, the mountain tops are meticulously groomed, boasting legendary off-piste skiing. This particular resort also contains some of the most challenging runs and beginner slopes for those still fresh to the sport.
