Silver Lakes Game Reserve
An additional area of approximately 77-hectares was incorporated into the existing Silver Lakes Golf Estate in 2001 when at an owner's General Meeting it was decided to authorise the Trustees to proceed with the incorporation of adjacent farmland into the Estate. The benefits of this addition has far outstripped any reservations or concerns at the time.
Number of Properties Within the Reserve
Just over 160 erven were planned and staked out for the area. Within days of the release of these full title properties by the developer, the stands were sold.
General
Small plains animals were introduced including springbuck, nyala, gemsbuck, waterbuck, blesbuck and kudu. A game warden was appointed to look after the animals that roam in the area ensuring their well-being and care. The addition of this nature reserve stretched the northern boundary of the Estate to the N4 highway. Vehicular access was provided from Hillside Street over a cattle grid to keep the game from leaving the area.
Value-adds
The value-add to owners of Silver Lakes Golf Estate has been immense. As the main dam in this area was enlarged and excavated it has become home to numerous water birds and various fish species. This area is not only a popular fishing spot (catch and release only) but is popular for families to enjoy a quiet picnic under the trees. Also amazing is the hiking and walking trails and popular cycling routes. Cycling in the area gives the feeling of being miles away from anywhere.
Name Change
In 2017 it was decided to change the name of Silver Lakes Golf Estate and incorporate "Wildlife" into the name.
It was a prudent move to not only incorporate this area (commonly known as Phase 3) into Silver Lakes but also to acknowledge its value by changing the Estate's name to Silver Lakes Golf and Wildlife Estate.
